Review: NKD SKN Tanner (Walgreens)

1:23 PMUnknown

In this day and age, it's very easy to find a gradual self-tanner in drugstores. More companies than ever carry sunless tanning products, and these companies are becoming increasingly aware of what people do and don't want (such as orange coloring, streaking, toxins, odor, etc. when it comes to the the 'don't' list).

But then there's me... I'm a commitment-phobic, control freak, so of course I have to take it one step further. I gravitate towards self tanners that are immediately visible and wash off on a moment's notice!  For those of you who have not heard of this ingenious tanning invention, it is called a cosmetic tanner. Essentially a cosmetic self tanner is body makeup. A dedicated drugstore shopper, I've always used my beloved Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs (the spray version). Sally Hansen has been on my holy grail beauty list since day one; however, it is the ONLY cosmetic self-tanner that I've found in a drugstore.
Rant: I wish I had more options to chose from! The struggle is real in drugstores: How has no other company capitalized on drugstore cosmetic tanners except for Sally Hansen!? How do veterans, like Jergens, not carry a wash-off tan in their huge line? Come on, Jergens! You've been in the game for long enough! Talk about about missing out on a hugely lucrative, business opportunity! End rant.
One day while I was shopping at Walgreens, I passed by the words '1-Day Bronzing' and gasped... It couldn't be! Oh, but it was. I went home and researched, looking for tutorials and reviews, but I didn't find too much. I found one YouTuber that gave NKD SKN a bad review. I decided to buy it anyway, as I was impatient at that point. When I went back to the store, there was only one bottle left and that color was 'Matte Dark'. Recently, I also bought the shade 'Matte Medium'. They cost $14.89 at Walgreens.

Now for the verdict... I'm giving this a 'big, disappointed, santa's-not-real style' thumbs down. I do not plan on purchasing this product again unless they make changes to the formula.

CONS:

  • In short, the main issue that I had was that the tan comes off WAY too easily!
    • If even the slightest drop of water/liquid fell on the skin, the tan ran right off. And, it streaked off in a very noticeable way. I was drying my hands after washing them and a drops of water ran down my arm and leg... Streaks that were sharp and many shades lighter than the surrounding tan. Imagine if rain, a spilled drink or sweat had hit my skin. Not very functional.

  • I didn't think it applied evenly for a cosmetic tan. The formula was like a liquid stain rather than liquid makeup.

  • It needs to be applied quickly, as it stains the skin almost immediately. You can see a saturated stain (in the picture above--the darker shade to the right) where I had squeezed out some of the product on my hand before buffing it into my skin.
  • It really only applies properly with a tanning mitt, which is stated in the directions. However, the mitt that it comes with is flimsy and small. In my experience, it wasn't even good enough for one use. It broke on me the first time I used it, and then the second mitt broke also.
  • The quality of the mitt must have been bad. I felt like it absorbed a lot of liquid and left it soggy, which increased the streaking as I continued to apply it.

  • I noticed that it stained pores, scars, cuts and dark spots, etc. on my skin. I had exfoliated before applying it, but it still absorbed into those areas in the most pigmented way. I also have body acne and blemishes and it made them look much worse (unlike the Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs spray, which offered a bit of coverage).
  • I wish they had a spray version also. I prefer a spray to the lotion.
PROS:

  • Beautiful color! The brown shade is very natural looking compared to other self-tanners. I also like that it's matte. A lot of bronzers add shimmer, which I personally don't like for body tanning.
  • I would agree that it is odorless! I couldn't smell anything. I believe they are the first company to create an odorless tan.

  • The formula is completely non-toxic and they use organic ingredients. I believe they were also the first company to create a completely non-toxic tan.
  • There's no DHA in this product.
  • The formula didn't feel cake-y, heavy or sticky--it didn't feel like anything actually!
  • The packaging is stylish.
  • It was available in a drugstore and it is cheaper than higher end brands, retailing at $14.89.
**Note that the pictures of my arm above had a very small amount of the tanning lotion on them. It's not as dark as it was the first time I tried it, but if I go darker it becomes problematic in terms of streaking and clinging to pores and blemishes. It's also more noticeable when it accidently comes off. I will try to post pictures that display this soon!

I'm pretty good at applying fake tan, and I think I would have been able to work with all of the cons, if it wasn't for how easily it came off and streaked the skin. All of the pros are pretty amazing too! I've been searching for another drugstore option, so I'm probably more disappointed than I should be.
I also bought two shades, so I wish it had been worth the money I spent.
Overall, I'm happy I tried it and I plan to figure out if I can do something to fix these problems or find another use for it. Maybe I'll just use it on my chest or neck?

Please let me know if you've tried NKD SKN's 1-day tans and if you had a different experience! Also, PLEASE let me know of any other cosmetic, wash-off tans! I need to find something to use and review! Please leave comments and questions below.

Thank you!

  1. I've never tried this tanner because I'm still a little hesitant to try them, I fear turning into an Oompa Loompa too much! However, when I do bite the bullet and give it a go I'll be sure to give this one a miss.

    1. Thank you for visiting my blog and leaving a comment! :D I understand your hesitation! I have similar fears! The only thing that is good about this sunless tanner is that it's a '1 Day Bronzing Tinted Lotion' so it will wash off immediately like makeup if it isn't satisfactory. There is no commitment if you don't like it. I really like Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs-it's a cosmetic, makeup tan and it also washes off instantly with no commitment like a gradual tanner or instant tanner that dyes the skin. I have heard good things about St. Tropez tan and I also think Tarte has a cosmetic, wash off tanner. I won't be purchasing this NKD 1 Day Bronzing tan again though. I'm not entirely sure, but I believe there gradual tanner or tanner that doesn't wash off immediately is supposed to be very good, on the contrary. I'm not sure and I'd have to try it myself or look at reviews. I hope this helps! Be sure to follow my blog if you can! xoxo
